Speaker: Dr Pincelli Hull, Yale
Abstract: When it comes to heat, this year has been one for the record books. September temperatures alone were an astonishing 1.44℃ warmer than the 20th century average. A heatwave in India has raised wet bulb temperatures in Dehli above the threshold considered survivable for mammals given prolonged exposure. This is our planet just a few degrees hotter than in pre-industrial times. Yet we know that much of the history of life was much, much hotter. In this talk, I will discuss what we know of extreme heat on this planet over the last 100 million years, and how it relates to questions of habitability in ancient and future ecosystems.
