Sacha Lapins is a Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Fellow in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Oxford. His research integrates seismology, volcanology and machine learning to better understand how fluids and magma move beneath volcanoes. By combining deep learning signal processing with next-generation seismic instrumentation, such as fibre-optic Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) and dense nodal networks, his work seeks to transform volcano monitoring and imaging of magmatic systems. Through projects in Central America and the UK, he develops and applies these methods to advance eruption forecasting and to support geothermal and carbon-storage monitoring, including the sustainable recovery of geothermal and mineral resources from volcanic fluids.
