Oxford Martin School launches four new £1 million research programmes tackling global challenges

Four new interdisciplinary research programmes, including the Oxford Martin Programme on Geological Hydrogen, have been awarded £1 million grants by the Oxford Martin School. Each programme aims to address major challenges in climate, the environment, food security and health.

The Geological Hydrogen project, whose researchers include Prof Chris Ballentine and Prof Claire Nichols from the Department of Earth Sciences, will investigate whether natural geological processes can be stimulated to generate low-carbon hydrogen underground, where this approach could work, and its potential to support more sustainable and secure fertiliser production.

The researchers will combine their expertise in geoscience, machine learning, economics and social science to deliver this innovative work.

This programme addresses Oxford EARTH’s critical gases research theme and represents an important step towards tackling the challenge of securing the resources society needs in ways that are both sustainable and equitable.
