James Bryson Promoted to Professor

Congratulations to James Bryson who has been promoted to Professor by the University’s Recognition of Distinction panel. This recognition is based on contributions to research, teaching, and service to the department, college, and broader University. James now becomes Professor of Planetary Science with immediate effect.

Professor Bryson is a leading planetary scientist whose research explores how rocky planets form and develop the conditions needed to support life. By analysing meteorites using advanced techniques including paleomagnetism, isotope geochemistry, electron microscopy and computer modelling, his work provides new insights into the earliest history of the Solar System and planetary evolution. Since joining the University of Oxford in 2020 as Associate Professor of Mineralogy, he has combined internationally recognised research with teaching across the undergraduate Earth Sciences curriculum. Prior to Oxford, he held research positions at the University of Cambridge and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he conducted pioneering work in planetary science.
