Mike Searle elected to Academia Europaea

Congratulations to Prof. Mike Searle who has been elected as a Member of Academia Europaea.

Academia Europaea was founded in 1988 and is a European, non-governmental association acting as an Academy. It has just over 3700 members including leading experts from the physical sciences and technology, biological sciences and medicine, mathematics, the letters and humanities, social and cognitive sciences, economics and the law. The object of Academia Europaea is the advancement and propagation of excellence in scholarship in all areas of academia.

A long-standing member of Oxford Earth Sciences Department, Mike’s research focusses on tectonic evolution of mountain belts, in particular processes associated with subduction, ophiolite formation and obduction, folding and thrusting, low-angle normal faults, regional metamorphism and crustal melting.  He work mainly along the Alpine-Himalayan belt, the Karakoram ranges and Tibetan Plateau region and Southeast Asia (Burma, Thailand, Vietnam, Yunnan). Mike is also heavily involved with the Department’s teaching, lecturing the undergraduates, leading the annual Assynt field trip and has also supervised more than 25 DPhil students.
