Earth Sciences postgraduate launches new YouTube Channel.

Oxford Earth Sciences DPhil student Brooke Johnson has recently launched a new You Tube Channel for geoscience communication. Brooke has extensive experience of outreach and public engagement with research, having been involved with multiple projects including ‘Skype a Scientist’ – in which he has supported students in colleges in Texas, as well as running local outreach activities with Oxfordshire schools, and last month he was awarded the Department’s Outreach prize for outstanding contributions to science communications.

Through his You Tube channel, Brooke aims to make Earth Sciences accessible to a wider range of people, and in ways that would not normally be available to those outside academia or industry. So far, episodes include introductions to rocks through the building stones of Oxford, describing and interpreting rocks sent in by viewers, and virtual microscope tours of hand specimens and thin sections. Future episodes will discuss controversial topics in Earth Sciences, field work, and an inside look at Earth Scientists and their research.
