I am a physical volcanologist interested in tephrostratigraphic studies of poorly-known volcanoes, in order to constrain past eruptive behaviour which can contribute to revise volcanic hazard assessments and allows us to assess how the system changes over time. This type of work is typically strongly based on detailed field studies and is complemented with geochronological, petrological, geochemical, textural and sedimentological data. Using these combined datasets, we can obtain constraints on frequency-magnitude relationships, eruptive (e.g. volume, eruption rate and eruption column height) and pre-eruptive (e.g. temperature, pressure, volatile contents) parameters, composition, etc., and understand the internal and external factors that may control the behaviour of volcanoes and individual eruptions.

I have worked on volcanoes in different tectonic settings, from rift volcanoes in Tanzania, to oceanic and continental arc volcanoes in the Philippines, Indonesia and Chile. In Chile I compiled a regional tephrostratigraphic record in the Lake District, to understand how the volcanic activity in this continental arc has evolved in post-glacial times. This work integrated terrestrial with high-resolution lacustrine sediment records and allowed us to construct a regional age model of volcanic activity, which can be used to fine-tune the age models of various palaeoenvironmental archives.

My primary passion as a volcanologist is however the poorly known volcanoes of East Africa. I have continued to work on Tanzanian volcanoes and capacity building projects since my PhD, and since late 2015 I also started working on the volcanoes of the Main Ethiopian Rift. This work is part of the RiftVolc project, a multidisciplinary collaboration between various institutes in the UK and Ethiopia. In addition to understanding the history of volcanism in this part of the East African Rift System from tephrochronological studies, I am looking at the eruption dynamics of explosive eruptions from alkaline systems, which are far less understood than their calc-alkaline counterparts.

One of the volcanoes I worked on, Gunung Agung in Bali, has entered an eruptive phase in November 2017, and is still on high alert (March 2018). A brief overview of Agung’s history explains a bit more about the ongoing situation. The full details are in my Agung paper.
