I am a physical oceanographer, investigating how and why the ocean moves. My research is mainly concerned with ocean ventilation – the movement of water from the surface ocean into its interior. This process is important for setting the density structure of the ocean, and for the storage of carbon dioxide and heat. I also have interests in ocean turbulence, Lagrangian perspectives of ocean circulation, and the role of high latitude oceans in biogeochemical cycles.
