My main research interests lie in the realm of volcanology, igneous petrology and planetary sciences. The next four years will see me between Oxford and the Natural History Museum in London, investigating how andesitic stratovolcanoes switch from effusive to explosive behaviour. To do this, I’m going to be collecting samples from Popocatépetl in Mexico and Soufriere St Vincent in the Lesser Antilles. By analysing the volatile contents (OH, F, Cl) in apatite crystals from lavas and pumices from these volcanoes, I hope to pin down the processes that magmatic volatiles undergo prior to different types of eruption and the timescales these occur on.
This work will build on my MSci project that looked into the petrogenesis of the El Fraile lavas at Popocatépetl that erupted prior to a major VEI = 6 eruption that occurred 14,000 years ago.
