My current research is primarily concerned with investigating the tectonic processes involved in the formation of so-called “cratonic” sedimentary basins, with particular focus on the Parnaíba basin, NE Brazil.
Cratonic basins are found within the interiors of the continents and are the largest sedimentary basins found on Earth. Despite >20 being recognised globally, the tectonic processes currently invoked to explain the unusual, long-lived subsidence remain controversial. This is partly due to a paucity of data, particularly pertaining to the detailed crustal and lithospheric structure beneath these basins.
We have therefore taken an observational approach and make use of an array of legacy and recently acquired geological/geophysical data to constrain both the structure and temporal subsidence evolution of this basin. These observations are then compared with predictions from various tectonic scenarios, allowing us to deduce basin forming processes.
This research is part of a collaborative research program funded by BP – the Parnaíba Basin Analysis Project (PBAP) – with several partner Institutes from both the UK and Brazil.
