Andy Parsons

Postdoctoral Research Associate

My research uses multi-disciplinary analyses of the geological record to investigate the geodynamics of tectonic processes and the tectonic evolution of regions on Earth. My research interests include subduction, orogenesis, rifting, ophiolites, petrology, structural and microstructural deformation, the Himalaya and Tethys Ocean and the North American Cordillera.

Currently, I am investigating global paleo-subduction zone dynamics and its control on plate tectonics crustal processes and regional geology (part of the ERC funded DEEP TIME project). This is achieved via integration of  bedrock geological analyses, examination of subducted slabs in the mantle via seismic tomography, and tectonic plate reconstruction modelling. I am also studying the tectonic evolution of the North American Cordillera with particular focus on the origin and significance of Paleozoic ophiolites (collaboration with the Geological Survey of Canada).

I enjoy fieldwork in challenging terrain and have worked in a variety of tectonic settings such as orogenic zones including metamorphic terranes (Yukon, North American Cordillera; Nepal Himalaya; Norway, Western Gneiss Region) and fold-and-thrust belts (Spanish Pyrenees), continental/island arcs (Yukon, North American Cordillera), strike-slip zones (Karakoram Fault Zone, NW India; Eskişehir Fault Zone, NW Turkey), passive margins (East Greenland) and ophiolites (Yukon, North American Cordillera).

I am also involved in research projects that investigate intracrystalline deformation and rheology in metamorphic rocks and mantle xenoliths using scanning electron microscopy – electron backscatter diffraction (SEM-EBSD) techniques (collaborations with researchers at the Utrecht University, University of Leeds and Virgia Tech).
