It is
generally recognized that the tectonic evolution of the external zones of
orogenic belts is controlled by two major phenomena. These are (1) foreland
basin flexure in response to both surface (i.e. topographic) and sub-surface
orogenic loads and (2) deformation of the fold and thrust belt. While there
have been a number of studies that have examined these phenomena separately,
only a few have focused on the interactions (and feedbacks) that must exist
between them. This essay will examine
these interactions and will explore their implications for a range of topical
problems in the Earth Sciences including the role of flexure in wedge dynamics,
the structural styles that develop in fold and thrust belts, and the structure,
facies and stratigraphy of foreland basins.
