This sequence experienced lower pressures than the main Barrovian sequence, but not as low as in the Buchan region to the north. Chloritoid schist thin section  DWS-238. Unusual in the Dalradian, chloritoid schist is common here, just below the staurolite isograd. Chloritoid porphyroblasts (high relief, bluish colour) and a new growth of muscovite laths post-date the main fabric (E-W in the image).  Field of view 1.5 cm. Many of the garnets have hollow cores replaced by muscovite and other minerals - these are 'atoll' garnets, by analogy with the shape of coral islands.  Field of view 1.5 cm.
Sillimanite zone thin section  A short distance up-grade from the previous specimens in Glen Clova, the assemblage now has foliation-parallel sheaves of fibrolitic sillimanite. Somewhat ragged grains of staurolite and kyanite persist. The garnets clearly predate the present schistosity and have discordant inclusion trails, mainly of quartz. Field of view 1.5 cm.
