Photomicrographs of the main practical reference sets compiled by John P Platt. A work in progress - the aim is to illustrate and annotate most of the material used in the practical classes.

Many millimetre-sized grains still show their sedimentary characterwith rounded shapes and a little undulose extinction. Others appear more irregular or have interlocking margins. A variety of grain shapes: the rounded grain right of centre probably preserves its detrital shape; other grains have lobate overgrowths. Some grains show undulose extinction. Narrow zone running across the image is probably related to fracturing with some fluid input: its track across the large bright quartz grain (right) appears marked by a train of fluid inclusions; other parts are composed of small new quartz grains of irregular shapes, and it's not clear if these are caused by dynamic recrystallisation or by new crystallisation in a narrow vein fracture (I suspect the latter).
