My academic career:

1972-1975 - University College of Wales, Aberystwyth.
B.Sc. Geology. Mapping project on the Loch Eriboll region, Moine Thrust zone, N.W.Scotland.

1976-1980 - Open University, Milton Keynes.
Ph.D. entitled "The metamorphic sheet and underlying volcanic rocks beneath the Semail Ophiolite in the northern Oman Mountains of Arabia "  funded by an Open University grant.

1980-1984 - Memorial University of Newfoundland, St.Johns, Newfoundland, Canada. Post-doctoral Research Fellow (NSERC) working on regional structural geology, ophiolite emplacement processes and tectonics of the Oman Mountains, western Newfoundland and the Ladakh - Zanskar Himalaya, India.

1984-1989 - Leicester University, U.K. Post-doctoral Research Fellow (NERC) under grant GR3/4242 awarded to Brian Windley, working on regional structural geology, mapping, balanced and restored cross-section construction, metamorphism and microprobe analyses (P-T-t paths), and collision-related thrust tectonics in: (1) Ladakh - Zanskar Himalaya, India, (2) Central Karakoram Ranges, northern Pakistan, and (3) Gangotri Himalaya, India.

1989-1996. - Oxford University, U.K.  Advanced Post-Doctoral Research Fellow (NERC) under personal grant GT5/F/89/GS6, working on the structural evolution of the crust in collision mountain belts from pre-collision ophiolite-obduction related tectonics (Oman Mountains) through to continent-continent collision belts (Karakoram, Himalaya, Tibet). Work has involved regional mapping, macro- and micro-structural analysis, microprobe analysis, thermobarometry, P-T-t paths and geochemical and tectonic interpretation.
From 1st October 1992 Lecturer in Worcester College, Oxford.
1996 -  present - Oxford University, U.K.  NERC Senior Research Fellow (GT5/96/13/E), position awarded for 5 (+5) years.
Departmental Tectonic Research Fellow.

Conferences Organised

1. Himalaya-Karakoram-Tibet Workshop 1985-  Leicester University, Nov. 1985. (with B.F.Windley). This extremely successful meeting brought together for the first time all active researchers from Europe, Asia and north America. It was decided to make it an annual event and subsequent Himalayan Workshops were held in Nancy, France (1986), Imperial College, London (1987), Lausanne, Switzerland (1988), Milan, Italy (1990), Auris, Grenoble, France (1991), Oxford, UK (1992), Vienna, Austria (1993), Kathmandu, Nepal (1994), Ascona, Switzerland (1995), Flagstaff, Arizona, USA (1996) , Rome, Italy (1997), Peshawar, Pakistan (1998), kloster Ettal, southern Germany (1999),  Chengdu, Sichuan, China (2000), Graz, Austria, (2001) Gangtok, Sikkim, India (2002), and Zurich, Switerland (2003).

2. Geology and Tectonics of the Oman Region Conference, held in the Royal Society of Edinburgh, March 1988, was organised by Alastair Robertson, myself, John Smewing and Alison Ries. This resulted in a Special Publication of the Geological Society, London, "Geology and Tectonics of the Oman Region" no. 49, which was edited by Robertson, myself and Ries and was published in 1990 (included 48 papers).

3. International Oman Ophiolite Conference, held in Sultan Qaboos University, Muscat, Oman during January 1990. I was invited to organise and lead one of the post-conference field excursions to the Hawasina Window area. This was entirely funded by the Ministry of Petroleum and Minerals, Oman government.

4.  Himalaya-Karakoram-Tibet Workshop 1992. This conference was held at Oxford University on 6-7-8 April 1992 and was organised by myself and Peter Treloar. Over 100 participants from 15 countries attended. A Special Publication of the Geological Society, London "Himalayan Tectonics" no.74 was published in September 1993 as a result of the conference, edited by P.J.Treloar and myself .
