I am a working as a post-doctoral researcher in the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Oxford, although I recently moved from the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Cambridge. My main research interest is investigating volcanic mercury emissions. I am interested in quanitifying the volcanic flux and understanding more about mercury speciation in volcanic emissions. Recent field work was carried out on Masaya, Nicaragua to simultaneously monitor Hg, SO2, CO2, H2S and HCl concentrations in the gas phase (article about this trip, focusing on Ken Sims' descent into the crater). Similar studies have since been carried out at Vulcano and Etna in Italy, Tatun, Taiwan and around a number of sites in the Philippines.

Previous research includes:

  • The complexation of copper in rainwater. Understanding trends and photochemical reactions (UNCW)
  • Using stable isotopes to assist in source apportionment of metals in aerosols (UEA).
  • Trends in trace metals in remote marine aerosols (UEA).
  • Developing an ultramicroelectrode system as a novel HPLC detector (Warwick).
